Christchurch Golf Club
Simon Cup - Canterbury Golf Men’s Interclub Competition
Review of 2011
In the 2011 Simon Cup interclub competition the Christchurch Golf Club team finished a very close second, losing the final against Russley at Russley 3½ : 4½. Earlier in the day we had beaten Templeton in the semi-final. The day was very windy, the greens very fast, and all the teams found any downhill, downwind putts very tricky. This made for some exciting golf, and after the satisfaction of the win in the semi-final the closeness of the final made for some great sport.
The team played their 18 hole pool matches on Sundays at a variety of clubs around Christchurch, and the ability to play “away from home” was quite important, as was any prior knowledge the players had of these courses. Surprisingly one of our worst results was at home at Shirley.
Although the competition is for teams of 8, as many as 13 players contributed during the season as injuries, illness, son’s sport, work and holidays kept players away at times. Without commenting on all, it is worth mentioning that Ian MacDonald (hcp 1) was very solid at the top of the order but did not find all his matches easy, and James Noonan was a very steady No.2. Handicaps ranged down to about 8. The other players involved were Henry Pearson, Peter Sim, Ryan Selwyn, James Ardagh, Tony Park, Andrew Gillespie, Rob Campbell, Rod Hayes, Steve Hicks, Andrew Sloane, Andrew Vincent and Seok Son. The latter filled in at very short notice one Sunday morning and had a very convincing win. As a general rule a score in the 70s was good enough for a win. Ian MacDonald did manage a very commendable 70 in one round for a big win.
The team was managed by Rod Hayes and Peter Sim.
Simon Cup 2012
This year the competition is over at least 8 weekends on Sundays from July 15 until October 14. (18 holes, roughly every fortnight, but on consecutive weekends at times.) Finals day is Sunday November 11 at Waitikiri.
Anyone interested in playing should contact:
Rod Hayes (366-2200) or Peter Sim (027-223-0944).
We ideally want 8 very competitive guys who are playing regularly, will be available every week, will do some practise and stay focussed and competitive till the bitter end. No tantrums, no lateness and no hangovers!
However as mentioned above, there is a need for a squad of about 10 regulars and a couple of emergencies available in times of need. Both junior and older players who fit the bill are welcome. The team will likely be a mixture, but performance will count. A commitment to the team is important. We do not want players who will suddenly desert to other teams (at Christchurch or elsewhere!). Names need to be in soon as the team will be finalised before the end of June, and a mixture of handicaps, Club Champs scores, tournament results and a trial game in June will be used to finalise places.
After losing in the final twice in four years - this year we want to win the competition!!!!
